A BBC Planet Earth III Impact Campaign

Knowing who’s visited tells us more than you think..

Recent findings have shown that South Africa’s Great White sharks are on the move, fleeing the infamous pair of Orca - Port & Starboard.

Changes in Great White shark movements means changes in ecosystem function, and areas to safely swim.

B-Roll footage may never make it to the big screen, but it does provide rare and valuable insights into a population of great white sharks on the run.

Following shark movements leads us to the last remaining healthy spots in the ocean - the critical habitats worth safeguarding.

Identifying individuals over time tells us what this eastward shift means biologically. It enables us to identify conservation opportunities while keeping bathers safe.

In celebration of the much anticipated Planet Earth III series, we have partnered with the BBC Natural History Studios on a Great White Shark Impact Campaign - generating positive impact from more than 7 years of effort. Work we’ve been fortunate to have been a part of from the very beginning.

The BBC Natural History Unit has generously provided unused underwater footage of great white sharks, along with the date, time and location filmed.

How it works

Matching individuals over time enables us to:

  1. Confirm there has been an eastward migration of individuals. Are we double-counting individuals?

  2. Estimate the population size of Great White Sharks in this area - a last refuge for the species.

  3. Understand seasonal patterns, residency and the reason(s) for visiting - why these places are important.

  4. Findings arm us with data for inclusive public outreach that dispels myths, fears and challenges misinformation.
